If Pigs Could…Swim?

If Pigs Could…Swim?

Wait-They can.

Let me be clear. There is nothing, and I mean nothing, cuter than a swimming piglet.

In the Bahamas, there are two islands that inhabit pigs and piglets that swim. Even for their neighbors, the swimming pigs are shrouded in mystery. Local legends abound, from a tale about a shipwreck to one about hungry pirates who dropped them off and never made it back for their meal. Others claim to have brought the first pigs to the island with hopes of starting up a pig farm in the late 1990s.

True to my obsession with the dental industry and my role as a sales consultant, when I saw the pigs swimming off of their island and into the water, it reminded me of my dental customers. Let me tell you why.

I found the swimming pigs to be totally unnatural, albeit adorable. How did they learn to feel comfortable in water? How do they not drown? How did they learn to interact with humans? Do they know that these humans are enticing them with hotdogs?

For many dentists, running a business feels totally unnatural. Where do you learn your (non-clinical )skills? How do you not sink your business? How do you learn to interact with different personality types? What entices you?

Dr. Harry Snelson, the director of communications for the American Association of Swine Veterinarians says, “Pigs are natural swimmers when the situation necessitates. In my experience, they are adequate to strong swimmers.”

Are all dentists “natural swimmers” when it comes to running a business? Not necessarily. The good news however, is the first principle of success is passion. Passion is the excitement or enthusiasm to become or achieve something great.

Harriet Tubman said, “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”
